Dear Friend,

If you are not already affected by autism’s widespread impact, chances are you will be.

My family is affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. Rarely do I ever consider one person having autism, because it takes an entire family (and more) to support and care for autistic family members.

I started this movement for two reasons:

1. My wife, Julia, has a younger brother with autism. While we’ve experienced many of the challenges facing families with autistic siblings, I know that Julia and her family have endured more challenges than most should have in a lifetime. Because of the immense resources needed to care for those affected by Autistic Spectrum Disorder, we need all the help we can muster – financially, creatively, and emotionally. The rate of Autistic Spectrum Disorder diagnoses is alarming (1 in 166 children), and we need to put forth every effort to help stem the rate of increase, establish treatments, and eventually find a cure.

2. My other reason for running a cell phone drive, instead of a money collection effort, is two-fold. 1) It doesn’t cost you anything, other than some effort in cleaning out your drawer…which may have already planned to do. 2) Old and unused cell phones are piling up in our drawers. While they are better for the environment sitting in your drawer than decaying in a landfill, they could be put to good use by those less fortunate, recycled, or reused. Plus they have more value than your typical box of cans, bottles, and newspapers.
